Restaurant Schuh

Interlaken's most famous café — chocolate shop and tearoom with Jungfrau views from the Hoheweg terrace

The Confiserie Schuh has occupied its corner on the Hoheweg since 1818, making it one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in Interlaken. The ground floor is a chocolate and confectionery shop; the café and restaurant above is all starched tablecloths, cream cakes, and waitstaff who have seen every variety of tourist come and go. The terrace looks straight down the Hoheweg towards the Jungfrau.

It is unashamedly touristy and priced accordingly. The draw is the pastry counter — particularly the meringues with double cream, a local speciality — and the historic setting. For a full meal, the prices are Swiss resort rates and the cooking is competent rather than inspiring. Come for coffee and cake and take the window seat; the people-watching on the Hoheweg is excellent.
