Barryland is the museum dedicated to the Saint Bernard, the massive, gentle mountain rescue dog that became one of Switzerland's most recognisable symbols. The museum covers the history of the breed, its connection to the Grand St Bernard hospice 50 km up the valley, and the mythology of the barrel-wearing mountain rescuer (the barrel is largely fictional, added by later artists for effect).
The real draw for many visitors is the dogs themselves: live Saint Bernards are kept on the premises and roam a large yard adjacent to the museum. You can meet them close up, which with dogs of this size and disposition is a memorable experience. The museum is particularly good for families. It is located near the Fondation Pierre Gianadda on the south side of town.
