Église Rouge

Neuchâtel’s red-brick Catholic basilica, a bold late-19th-century landmark just above the lakeside city centre.

Église Rouge, formally the Basilica of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, is the Catholic landmark that breaks up Neuchâtel's pale stone and lakeside palette. Its red-brick massing and neo-medieval details make it easy to spot from nearby streets, especially when walking between the station side of town and the lake.

The church is most worthwhile for architecture and orientation rather than a long interior visit. Step inside if it is open, then continue toward the old town or waterfront; the building works well as a visual counterpoint to Neuchâtel's castle, arcades, and quieter Protestant churches.
