Männlichen

A ten-minute cable-car ride from the edge of Wengen reaches the Männlichen at 2,343 metres. The top station sits on a broad grass saddle with a 360-degree view: across the valley to the Eiger north face, south to the Jungfraujoch, west towards the Brienzersee. There is a restaurant, a kids' play area, and a small chapel.

The walk from the Männlichen down the ridge to Kleine Scheidegg — the Royal Walk — is one of the great easy hikes of the Alps: an hour and a half on a near-level path with the Eiger directly in front of you the whole way. From Kleine Scheidegg you can take the train back to Wengen or continue down to Grindelwald.

A story
The Männlichen cable car from Wengen, opened in 1978, was for years the longest single-span aerial cableway in Europe. From the top, on a clear day, the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau line up almost in profile — the classic image of the Bernese Alps.
