Frau Gerolds Garten — "Mrs. Gerold's Garden" — is the sprawling urban-garden bar that became, almost overnight in 2012, the social centre of Zurich-West. The site is a pocket of land along the railway viaduct in Kreis 5: shipping containers, raised vegetable beds, repurposed seating, a wooden stage, and a long open-air bar serving local craft beer, wine, and weekly-changing food from a rotation of small kitchens.
In summer it overflows from open-air drinking into outdoor cinema, live music, swap meets, and a Sunday brunch market. In winter it shrinks into a more intimate Glühwein-and-fondue heated section, with sheepskin throws on the seats. There is also an excellent rotation of pop-up restaurants. The crowd is mid-twenties to mid-forties, design-adjacent, fashionably casual; arrive before 7 p.m. to get a seat on a warm Friday.
