The James Joyce Pub near Zurich's main station was built using the original Victorian fittings of a 19th-century Dublin pub — mahogany bar, stained glass, and brass fixtures transported wholesale from Ireland. The result is about as close as Zurich gets to a genuine literary pub, and it has a loyal following among expats, tourists, and locals who appreciate a proper Guinness.
The connection to Joyce is partly atmospheric rather than historical — Joyce's Zurich haunts were the cafés and theaters of the old city rather than Irish pubs, which didn't exist here in his day. But the pub takes its namesake seriously: there are Joyce portraits on the walls, a good selection of Irish whiskeys, and a lively atmosphere on Bloomsday. A convenient base for exploring the old town.
