Predigerkirche

Gothic Dominican preachers' church with one of the city's most spectacular interiors

The Predigerkirche, the fourth of Zurich's old-town churches alongside the Grossmünster, Fraumünster and St. Peter's, was the church of the medieval Dominican preaching friars (Prediger = preacher). The exterior is plain to the point of being almost easy to miss, but the choir — added between 1308 and 1350 — is one of the tallest Gothic interiors anywhere in Switzerland, an extraordinarily soaring space lit by high lancet windows.

The nave has been simplified and rebuilt several times since the Reformation; the choir is the survivor. The church is now mainly used for concerts (it has remarkable acoustics), with the Zentralbibliothek and Pestalozzi library next door occupying the former monastic buildings. Open most days; ask at the entrance whether the choir vault is currently visible (it is sometimes screened off for restoration work).
