Mt. Hoverla

Ukraine's highest peak at 2061m, demanding trail from Vorokhta

Ukraine's highest peak at 2061 metres. The trailhead most commonly used from Vorokhta begins near the Prut River source and climbs steeply through forest before breaking into alpine meadow. The trail is well-worn but genuinely demanding — the final push to the summit involves scrambling over loose rock, and there is often snow at the top even in July. Start early, bring warm clothes regardless of the forecast, and do not attempt it in poor visibility without a guide.

The summit view on a clear day takes in the full sweep of the Carpathians and, on exceptional days, extends into Romania. A small trident monument marks the top.

A story
President Viktor Yushchenko climbed Hoverla during his 2004 election campaign as a symbol of his pledge to clean up Ukraine — and literally cleaned up the trail on the way down, removing litter left by previous visitors.
