Yablunytsia Pass

The main Carpathian road pass at 931m, with sweeping ridge views

Yablunytsia Pass sits at 931 metres and carries the main road through the Carpathians between Vorokhta and the lower Carpathian foothills to the northwest. The pass is a natural stopping point on the road between Yaremche and the high mountain towns, and the views from the top of the road cut are excellent — a wide panorama across the forested ridges with the Chornohora peaks rising to the south.

A short walk up the ridge from the road gives even better views. The village of Yablunytsia itself lies just below the pass on the western side, a quiet agricultural settlement with wooden farmhouses typical of the Hutsul region. The pass is accessible year-round by car, though winter conditions can be severe and chains or snow tyres are advisable from November to March.

A story
The pass has been a strategic crossing point through the Carpathians for centuries, used by armies, traders, and migrants alike. During World War One the mountain front ran through these ridges, and the surrounding forests still occasionally yield traces of trenches and rusted equipment.
