The Prut River begins on the high slopes of the Chornohora massif, not far below the Hoverla trailhead. The source area is reached on the same approach route used for climbing Ukraine's highest peak — walkers heading for Hoverla will pass close to the spring that marks the river's origin. The spot itself is modest: a boggy hollow in the alpine meadow where clear water emerges from the ground, cold even in August.
The walk to this point from Vorokhta takes two to three hours along well-marked forest trails. The surrounding landscape — wide alpine meadows, scattered pine and dwarf mountain pine, views back down the Prut valley to the town far below — is worth the effort independently of the summit ambition. You can stop at the source, have lunch in the meadow, and return without committing to the full Hoverla climb.
