Jupiter Factory

Officially a tape recorder factory; in fact a Soviet military electronics plant.

The Jupiter Factory sits on the western edge of Pripyat, a sprawling industrial site that operated under the cover of a consumer electronics plant. After the accident it was used briefly as a decontamination research base; trolleys, lockers, and gas masks are scattered across the assembly halls.

Visits to Jupiter are not on every itinerary — the site is large, partly collapsed, and reaches of it have higher radiation readings than the town centre. When guides do include it, the route usually covers the canteen, the central administrative wing with its mural of Soviet workers, and a small museum room left behind by liquidators.

A story
Officially Jupiter produced cassette decks for the Mayak brand. In reality the bulk of the plant was a closed military electronics works making components for missile guidance systems — a fact made public only after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The accident shut it down before its existence was officially admitted.
