Yaniv Railway Station

Abandoned railway station with carriages still rusting on the sidings.

Yaniv was the rail head for Pripyat, a kilometre south of the town along the road to the power plant. Goods trains brought construction material and fuel here through the 1970s and 1980s; commuter services connected workers from the surrounding villages. After the evacuation the lines were cut and a handful of locomotives and passenger carriages were left where they stood.

The platform building is a small one-storey shed with a peaked roof and faded Cyrillic signage. The sidings still hold rusted rolling stock — the most photographed are a row of refrigerator wagons being slowly absorbed by saplings. Visits are short, in part because the soil along the embankment is one of the more contaminated spots in this corner of the zone.
