Dormition Cave Monastery

Orthodox cave monastery cut into the limestone cliffs

Address Mariam-Dere Valley, Bakhchysarai

A Byzantine-era Orthodox monastery carved into the vertical limestone cliffs of the Mariam-Dere gorge, on the path leading to Chufut-Kale. The principal church of the Dormition is reached by a long stone staircase climbing the cliff face, with the painted cave chapel visible on the way up. Pilgrims have visited continuously for at least eight centuries.

The monastery still functions as a working Russian Orthodox community, so dress modestly and avoid Sundays if you prefer to visit quietly. The combination of the dramatic setting, the cliffside churches, and the springs at the foot of the cliff make this one of the most atmospheric religious sites in Crimea. A 30-minute walk from the Khan's Palace, then continue up to Chufut-Kale for a full day's excursion.

A story
Tradition holds that the monastery was founded after an icon of the Virgin Mary miraculously appeared on the cliff face. The cliffs are honeycombed with rock-cut cells, churches, and storerooms; the founders chose the location because it was inaccessible to raiders, and even the climb up by the stone staircase is steep enough to keep the casually curious away.
