Tahtalı-Jami Mosque

1707 wooden-roofed neighbourhood mosque

Address Bakhchysarai old town

An early 18th-century neighbourhood mosque in the old town, distinguished by its unusual wooden roof — tahtalı means "wooden" in Crimean Tatar — which sets it apart from the more typical tiled-roof mosques of the city. The minaret is short and stocky.

Like Orta Cami, this mosque was returned to the Crimean Tatar community after 1991 and is once again used for worship. It is a five-minute walk from the Khan's Palace, in a quiet residential lane lined with traditional low stone houses. Visit outside prayer times; the surrounding streets are themselves worth a slow walk.
