Simferopol is the natural base for exploring the rest of Crimea. The most rewarding day trip is to Bahchisaray, 30km west, with its remarkable Tatar khan's palace and the cliff monastery at Chufut-Kale. The trolleybus and bus routes south reach Yalta and the rest of the south coast, including the imperial Livadia Palace. Sevastopol and the ancient ruins of Chersonesus are about an hour and a half by bus.
