Simferopol Art Museum

A small but unexpectedly fine collection of Russian and Ukrainian painting from the 18th century to the early Soviet period, housed in a handsome late-19th-century building in the city centre. Look in particular for the Aivazovsky seascapes — the Crimean-born artist's enormous, churning paintings of the Black Sea — and the section on the Cimmerian school, painters who settled on the peninsula in the early 20th century.

There is also a strong selection of Western European etchings and a few rooms of decorative arts. Labels are in Russian only, but the work largely speaks for itself. Closed Mondays; entry is inexpensive.
