Novy Svet (Novyi Svit)

Novy Svet is a small village about 7 kilometres west of Sudak, set in a dramatic bay between limestone cliffs and pebble beaches. The village itself is charming and relatively unspoiled, with a few hundred residents, a shaded promenade, and access to some of the clearest water on the Crimean coast. The three beaches — Green Bay, Blue Bay, and Thieves' Bay — are reached by a cliff path from the village and are spectacularly situated.

The Novy Svet winery, founded by Prince Golitsyn in 1878, produces sparkling wines in the traditional méthode champenoise. The winery's caves — carved into the limestone cliffs by Golitsyn's workers — can be visited by tour, and the wines can be tasted and bought at the estate. The dry Brut is the best of the range.

A story
Novy Svet was founded in 1878 by Prince Lev Golitsyn, who established the sparkling wine enterprise here and named it 'New World.' Golitsyn's wine won first prize at a Paris exhibition in 1900 — the same year he presented a bottle to Tsar Nicholas II, who made it the official sparkling wine of the Russian imperial court.
