Golitsyn Trail

The Golitsyn Trail is a 4-kilometre path along the dramatic limestone cliffs between Novy Svet and the neighbouring cove, carved into the rock face in the 1880s at the initiative of wine producer Prince Golitsyn. The path winds through juniper woods and along exposed cliff edges, with views of the sea far below and the layered limestone formations that give this coastline its character.

The trail begins at Novy Svet village and takes about two hours return. The best section is the part that traverses the cliff above Green Bay, where the path narrows to a ledge cut directly into the rock. There are caves along the route, one of which Golitsyn used for champagne storage — the constant temperature and humidity making it ideal. The juniper trees here are among the oldest on the Crimean coast.

A story
The trail was created by Prince Lev Golitsyn in the 1880s as a scenic path through the limestone cliffs of his estate at Novy Svet. Golitsyn was obsessed with both wine and nature; he carved terraces into the cliff face and planted rare trees from across the Black Sea region, many of which survive.
