Yuzhnoye Aerospace Museum

Soviet rocket and missile history from a once-secret city

Dnipro was for decades a closed city because it was home to the Yuzhnoye (Southern) Design Bureau, which designed Soviet ballistic missiles and the rockets that launched Sputnik. The aerospace museum documents this secret history with exhibits of actual rockets, engines, spacecraft components, and Cold War-era missile technology. The industrial scale of what was built here, and the clandestine circumstances in which it was built, make this one of the more genuinely unusual museums in Ukraine.

The collection includes full-size rockets standing outdoors in the museum grounds, engine cutaways, space capsule models, and archival photographs from the classified era. For anyone who grew up during the Cold War — or who wants to understand just how much of the Space Race was driven by military necessity — this is essential viewing.

A story
The Yuzhnoye Design Bureau here built the R-16 intercontinental ballistic missile — the ICBM at the heart of the Soviet nuclear arsenal during the Cold War. For thirty years, the entire city of Dnipro was classified on Soviet maps and closed to all foreigners. The engineers who worked here could not tell even their families what they were building.
