Getting There

Note: All transport links described here reflect the situation before 2014. Donetsk is not currently accessible.

By air. Donetsk International Airport handled flights from Kyiv, Moscow, and several European cities. It was destroyed during fighting in 2014–2015 and is no longer operational.

By rail. Donetsk railway station on the southern edge of the centre was the main rail hub, with overnight trains to Kyiv (roughly 12 hours), Kharkiv, and connections across Ukraine and to Russian cities. The station building, built in the 1930s, was one of the city's architectural landmarks.

By road. The M04 highway connected Donetsk to Kharkiv and Kyiv to the north-west. Bus services from the central bus station reached cities across eastern Ukraine and beyond. The journey to Kyiv by bus took around 14 hours.
