When to Go

Donetsk has a continental climate with cold winters and hot, occasionally humid summers. The most comfortable visiting months were May, June, and September — warm enough for outdoor cafes and parks, not oppressively hot. July and August brought temperatures regularly above 30°C; the industrial character of the city made the heat feel heavier than it would in a greener place.

Winters were genuinely cold, with temperatures dropping below minus 10°C in January and February. Snow was common but not always reliable. The city's wide Soviet boulevards became bleak in winter, though the indoor cultural life — opera, ballet, theatre — was at its best.

The main event to time a visit around was a Shakhtar Donetsk home match. The club was a serious European competitor in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and the Donbas Arena on a UEFA Champions League night was one of the better football atmospheres in Eastern Europe.
