Town Hall (Ratusha)

The town hall in the middle of Market Square is the city's defining building — a slender, pale four-storey block with a 49-metre tower, built in 1929 in a stripped-down constructivist style on the foundations of three earlier ratushas (the previous ones burned down, were demolished, or were knocked about in successive wars). It still houses the city council.

The Regional History Museum occupies several floors and the tower. Climb up for a panoramic view across the radial streets — on a clear day you can see the foothills of the Carpathians to the south. Tickets are cheap; the climb is unguarded; the captions are mostly in Ukrainian only.
