Ivano-Frankivsk is the natural base for the Carpathian Mountains an hour to the south — hiking in summer, skiing in winter, and the mountain villages of the Hutsul people, Ukraine's distinctive Carpathian highland culture. Lviv, an easier sister city with the same Habsburg history, is two and a half hours by train and well worth combining with this trip if you can.
