Althorp House

The Spencer family home 10 kilometres north of Northampton, Althorp has been in the family since 1508 and is one of the finest country houses in England. The house contains an important collection of Old Master paintings, fine furniture, and porcelain accumulated over five centuries. The state rooms are open to visitors in summer (July and August), giving access to rooms that are normally the private home of Earl Spencer.

Diana, Princess of Wales, who grew up here, is buried in the grounds — her grave on a small island in the ornamental lake is visible from the path through the park. The estate also includes extensive parkland, a 17th-century stable block, and a gift shop. Althorp is only open for six weeks in summer; check dates before visiting. It is accessible by car from Northampton in about 20 minutes; public transport options are limited.

A story
Diana, Princess of Wales, grew up at Althorp and is buried on a small island in the lake in the park. After her death in 1997, the estate created a memorial exhibition that drew hundreds of thousands of visitors. Her grave is not publicly accessible — it is visible from a pathway across the lake — which gives it an air of deliberate separation from the estate's more formal visitor experience.
