Delapré Abbey

Restored abbey and country house south of Northampton, set beside parkland and gardens.

Delapré Abbey gives Northampton a substantial historic house within walking or short-bus distance of the centre. The site began as a medieval nunnery, later became a country house, and now tells its long story through restored rooms, exhibitions, gardens, and the surrounding park.

It is a good counterweight to the town's churches and civic buildings because it feels more spacious and layered. Leave time for the grounds if the weather is kind; they make the visit feel less like a house tour and more like a small estate escape on the edge of town.
