Northampton Guildhall

The Victorian Gothic Guildhall on St Giles' Square is the grandest building in central Northampton. Its elaborate stone façade, completed in 1864 and extended in 1892, is dense with carved decoration: statues of medieval kings and figures associated with Northampton's history, heraldic shields, and ornamental stonework that reflects the confident civic ambition of the Victorian era.

The interior, used for council meetings and civic events, includes an impressive Great Hall decorated with paintings and stained glass. Access to the interior is possible on open days and by arrangement; check the council website for scheduled tours. The building fronts St Giles' Square, which together with the nearby market square forms the civic heart of the town.

A story
The Guildhall was built in 1864 to a High Victorian Gothic design, and its façade is covered with carved figures of famous people connected to Northampton — Richard III, Henry I, Thomas à Becket, and others — alongside allegorical figures representing trade and industry. It was an act of civic pride at a moment when the shoe trade was making Northampton prosperous, and the building shows it.
