The Bell Inn

15th-century timber-framed pub on Old Market Square with a network of medieval cellars.

Address 18 Angel Row, Nottingham NG1 6HL

The Bell stands on Angel Row, just off Old Market Square, and is the second of Nottingham's pubs that lays a claim to genuine medieval origins. The current timber-framed building dates from 1437 and the cellars carved into the sandstone below have been dated by dendrochronology to the early 1400s. Tours of the cellars run on most Saturday mornings — book ahead at the bar.

Upstairs it's a comfortable, traditional city pub: real ales from local breweries, a decent kitchen doing pies and Sunday roasts, and live jazz on Sundays. Less of a tourist circus than the Trip, and a better choice if you actually want to sit and have a couple of pints.
