Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem

A pub built into the caves under Nottingham Castle, claiming to be England's oldest.

Address Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham NG1 6AD

The Trip — as everyone calls it — is built directly into the sandstone cliff beneath Nottingham Castle, with a frontage of low, white-washed beams and several of its rooms carved straight into the rock. The pub claims a date of 1189 and disputes the title of "oldest inn in England" with several other contenders; the cave rooms certainly feel as old as anything in the city.

The beer is Greene King mostly and the food is standard pub fare, but the setting is what draws people. Go on a weekday afternoon when it's quiet enough to look properly at the cave ceilings and the famously cursed model galleon hanging above the bar. Around the corner are the equally cave-bound Ye Olde Salutation Inn and the Hand and Heart, both worth a follow-up pint.

A story
The pub's name refers to the legend that crusaders stopped here for a pint on the way to the Holy Land in the 12th century. The cave system the pub occupies certainly dates back that far; the building above it is mostly 17th-century.
