The pub scene is solid rather than spectacular. The Lion Walk and Trinity Street areas have a good mix of cask-ale pubs and student-friendly bars (Colchester has the University of Essex on its eastern edge). The Three Wise Monkeys on the High Street is a long-standing music pub; The Hospital Arms near the old Severalls site is the choice for cask beer. Independent coffee can be found at the Hollytrees Cafe and a couple of newer roasters around Crouch Street.
