Colchester is well placed for trips out into Essex and beyond. Harwich — a working ferry port with a perfectly preserved medieval old town — is twenty minutes by train. Mersea Island, reached by a tidal causeway, is the home of Colchester's oyster beds and a strong contender for the best beach within an hour of town. The Constable country around Dedham Vale is just to the north along the Stour.
