Colchester Zoo is one of the area's biggest family attractions, spread across a large site southwest of the town. The collection includes big cats, primates, elephants, reptiles, birds, and smaller habitat zones, with a layout that can easily fill several hours.
It is not in the historic centre, so it works best as a deliberate half-day trip rather than a quick add-on to Colchester Castle. Families will find the strongest appeal, but animal-focused travelers may also prefer it to another museum stop.
