Dutch Quarter

Tudor streets built by Flemish weavers in the 1560s

A cluster of timber-framed houses in the streets around St Martin's Road, built by Flemish Protestant weavers who settled in Colchester from the 1560s onwards. The Dutch Quarter is one of the best-preserved examples of this kind of immigrant community in England — the weavers brought their weaving skills and transformed Colchester into a cloth-making town. Walking the narrow streets here feels a world away from the Roman town just a few hundred metres away.
