A long, golden, banana-shaped building by the Uruguayan architect Rafael Vinoly, opened in 2011 as Colchester's contemporary visual-arts space. The interior is one wide curving gallery wrapped around a glass-walled cafe and an auditorium; the floor follows the curve of the building and the lighting comes through clerestory windows above. Visiting exhibitions tend to mix established names with regional artists.
The building's centrepiece is the Berryfield Mosaic — a fragment of a 2nd-century Roman pavement uncovered on the site during construction, now displayed in the floor of the main gallery. Free entry; allow an hour. The cafe is good for lunch.
