Roman Town Walls

The Roman walls that encircle the old town were built around 65–80 AD and are among the best-preserved Roman fortifications in Britain. You can walk alongside substantial stretches of them, particularly along Balkerne Hill and along the north and east sides of the town. The walls stand up to six metres high in places, faced with dressed stone and still clearly Roman in character.
