Hitchin sits on the East Coast Main Line and is reached from London King's Cross in around 30 minutes by Thameslink and LNER services — fast enough that the town has become a serious commuter destination. The railway station is a 10-minute walk east of the centre on Walsworth Road.
The town is one junction off the A1(M) motorway (junction 8); London is about 35 miles south, Cambridge about 30 miles north-east. There is no direct intercity bus to compare with the train.
