The Norfolk Broads begin on Lowestoft's doorstep — Oulton Broad, a large broad connected to the River Waveney, is practically part of the town, and boat hire is available there. Southwold, one of the most handsome small towns on the Suffolk coast, is about 15 miles south and famous for its Adnams brewery, pier, and beach huts. Ipswich to the south makes a good half-day trip for the Waterfront and Christchurch Mansion.
Norwich is the nearest city, about 35 miles west, and easily reached by train in half an hour. It offers the cathedral, the castle museum, and a very good food scene.
