Mincarlo

Mincarlo is a preserved wooden sidewinder trawler, the last surviving example of the type of vessel that once dominated Lowestoft's fishing fleet. She was built in 1961 and worked the North Sea until 1975, when she was retired and eventually restored by the Lowestoft Maritime Trust.

The vessel is moored in the outer harbour and can be visited when open. Walking her decks gives a vivid sense of what life was like for North Sea trawlermen — the cramped quarters, the heavy gear, the practicalities of a working fishing boat. Mincarlo is a Grade II listed vessel and one of a small number of traditional fishing boats preserved around the UK coast.

A story
Mincarlo is the last surviving sidewinder fishing trawler of the Lowestoft fleet. At her peak in the 1960s, Lowestoft had over a hundred such vessels; today she is the only one left, preserved as a floating memorial to an industry that once employed thousands of local families.
