Catbells

The pointed little ridge on the western side of Derwentwater is the postcard fell of the northern Lakes — a perfect first peak with a real summit feel, modest in height (451 m) but with the lake on one side and the Newlands Valley on the other.

Take the launch from Keswick to Hawes End, walk up the well-trodden path to the top, and either return the same way or carry on along the ridge to High Brandelhow for a different boat back. Four miles, two and a half hours. Slippery in the wet; in summer, expect company.

A story
Alfred Wainwright described Catbells as 'one of the great favourites — a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together' — and on a bank holiday afternoon you can verify that, queueing politely up the steeper rock steps near the top.
