Day Trips

Almost everything else in the northern Lakes is within an hour's drive of Keswick. Buttermere and Crummock Water sit beyond Honister, ringed by some of the most photogenic fells in the country. Bassenthwaite Lake, the only true "lake" in the Lake District (everything else is a "water" or a "mere"), lies just north of town. Whinlatter Forest has waymarked mountain-bike trails, a Go Ape course, and an osprey viewpoint over Bassenthwaite. Further afield, Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall are a comfortable day's outing east; Cockermouth, the small Georgian town where Wordsworth was born, is half an hour west.
