Moot Hall

The most photographed building in town stands marooned in the middle of the market square, the cobbled street parting around it like water around a rock. Built of local slate and topped with a small bell tower, it is the visual centre of Keswick — for two days a week, the market sets up around it.

Inside is the National Park information centre, the usual maps and walk leaflets, and the official starting point of the Bob Graham Round, the legendary 24-hour fell circuit that begins and ends at the Moot Hall steps.

A story
The current Moot Hall dates from 1813, but a building has stood on this spot in the middle of the market square since at least the 16th century — the south face still has a one-handed clock, which was all you needed to read the time before factories made hours matter.
