St Kentigern's Church, Crosthwaite

The parish church of Keswick, half a mile north of the centre on the edge of Crosthwaite. A wide, low-roofed medieval building, mostly 16th century with earlier fragments, and a magnificent set of consecration crosses still legible on its walls.

The graveyard is the literary reason to come: Robert Southey is buried inside the church, and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley — the Crosthwaite vicar who co-founded the National Trust — is buried by the south porch. The walk back into town through Great Crosthwaite is pretty.
