Penshaw Monument

Hilltop Greek-style monument and landmark viewpoint on the edge of Sunderland.

Penshaw Monument is one of Sunderland's defining landmarks, a Greek temple-like structure set high on Penshaw Hill. Built in the 1840s in memory of the first Earl of Durham, it is visible from miles around and gives the surrounding landscape a clear focal point.

The short climb is part of the experience. From the top you get wide views over Wearside and toward the coast, and the monument pairs naturally with nearby Herrington Country Park. It is simple, exposed, and memorable: exactly the sort of local landmark that makes a detour feel worthwhile.
