Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens

The Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is the city's main civic museum, housed in a Victorian building on Burdon Road that was extended in 2001 with a striking glass and steel winter garden. The museum collection covers local and natural history, with strong displays on the city's shipbuilding and glass-making industries, ceramics, and the geology of the northeast coast. Entry is free.

The winter garden component — a large glass-roofed tropical house — contains around 2,000 plants including some striking large specimens. There is also an art gallery attached to the museum complex, showing a mix of the permanent collection (which has good examples of Wearside ceramics and Victorian paintings) and temporary exhibitions. The café is one of the better options in the city centre.

A story
The Winter Gardens section has a long history of progressive accessibility: from the 1870s onward the museum offered tactile exhibits and guided tours specifically designed for blind visitors, making it one of the first public museums in England to do so systematically. The practice was pioneered by the curator James Alderson, whose approach influenced museum practice across the country.
