Burnley Mechanics

Historic Victorian theatre and arts venue in the town centre

Burnley Mechanics is a Grade II listed Victorian theatre and arts centre in the town centre. Originally a Mechanics' Institute from 1855, the building now operates as a full-service venue presenting theatre companies, comedy nights, live music (particularly blues and jazz), and community events.

The building has a handsome Victorian interior with a proper theatrical auditorium. It serves as Burnley's main cultural venue and tends to attract touring productions from Manchester and further afield. Worth checking the programme before a visit — the quality varies but the best nights are genuinely good.

A story
The Burnley Mechanics opened in 1855 as a Mechanics' Institute — one of the movement's institutions that provided working-class men with libraries, lecture halls, and educational facilities. By the late 19th century it had expanded into a fully equipped theatre. It has hosted everyone from Laurence Olivier to Harry Houdini over its long history and continues to present a programme of theatre, comedy, blues, and jazz.
