When to Go

Manchester has a reputation for rain, and it is earned. Overcast skies and drizzle are common year-round, so pack a waterproof whatever the season. Summers are mild, with temperatures rarely exceeding 22C, while winters are cold and grey but seldom bitterly so.

The city is busiest over the Christmas period, when the Albert Square Christmas Markets draw crowds from across the region. Sellers from continental Europe set up stalls with mulled wine, bratwurst, and artisan goods from late November through December. Summer brings the Manchester International Festival (odd-numbered years) and Manchester Pride in late August, which centres on Canal Street and fills the city with colour and energy.

The Salford Dragon Boat Festival in July draws teams of rowers to the quays near the Lowry for a day of racing and celebration. For the best combination of weather and events, aim for June through August. For deals on flights and accommodation, January and February are the quietest months.
