Downham

Lancashire village on Pendle Hill's western slopes, preserved by estate rules and witch-trial history.

Downham is one of the prettiest villages in Lancashire, tucked onto the western slopes of Pendle Hill in an area forever linked with the Pendle Witch trials of 1612. The village green, stone cottages, and absence of television aerials (banned by the local estate) give it an almost impossibly preserved character — which is why it has appeared in numerous films and television dramas over the years.

It is also the starting point for excellent walks up Pendle Hill, with wide views across the Ribble Valley and beyond. The hill itself is a straightforward climb and the setting makes the effort very worthwhile.

Things to Do

Downham offers walking, history, and a village atmosphere that has been carefully preserved over generations. The main draws are the climb up Pendle Hill, St Leonard's Church, and the village green with its old stocks — simple pleasures that repay the journey. The surrounding countryside, all drystone walls, meadows, and becks, is among the most attractive in Lancashire.
