The Nag's Head sits on its own island in the middle of the Thames, reached by a footbridge from Bridge Street. It is the obvious lunchtime choice in Abingdon — a generous riverside terrace, beer from local Oxfordshire breweries, and standard pub food done well, with the usual Sunday roast a particular draw.
The pub is owned by the Abingdon Bridge Charity that has held the island since the 1400s, with proceeds still going to the bridge's upkeep. Book a table at weekends in summer; on a sunny afternoon the terrace fills early.
