The Old Anchor sits just behind St Helen's Church on the river, in a low timber-framed building that has been a pub since at least the seventeenth century. Inside there are three connected rooms with beams, a working fireplace, and a small terrace at the back that overlooks the meeting of the Thames and the Ock.
The kitchen does a decent line in pies and traditional British plates; the beer selection skews toward Greene King and rotating guests. It is the most atmospheric pub in central Abingdon and the obvious place for a pint after walking up from the bridge.
