Jack and Jill are the two white windmills on the Downs north of Brighton, and they make a fine excuse to leave the seafront for a few hours. The mills sit high above Clayton, where open chalk downland gives broad views back toward the coast and inland across Sussex.
Jill is the better-known working mill, restored by volunteers and sometimes open for visits, while Jack stands close by as its private companion. Even when the interiors are closed, the walk up is worthwhile for the skyline, the wind, and the sudden change from Brighton's busy streets to sheep-cropped hills.
