West Blatchington Windmill is a small but distinctive survival from the rural landscape that existed before Hove spread inland. The six-sided smock mill dates from the 1820s and still keeps much of its milling machinery, which makes it more than just a pretty shape on the skyline.
It is not a headline Brighton sight, and that is part of the appeal. Come when it is open and you get a compact lesson in grain, gears, sails, and local farming history; come when it is closed and it still makes a pleasant add-on to a walk through this quieter side of Hove. Check opening times, as access is limited and often seasonal.
